Benenden School, Sports Pavilion

Benenden School, a repeat client, appointed Chartway Construction as main contractor for their new sports pavilion.

Sport and fitness is a vital part of our client, Benenden School’s curriculum and they have a longstanding aspiration to allow as many students as possible to participate in sport. The school identified that they needed the facilities to enable their students to compete at national and international level. Part of the school’s development plan included a new all-weather pitch and pavilion, this was to allow the school to meet the demands of a complete programme of competitive sport and to remain competitive with its peer institutions. 

Chartway Construction was appointed to construct a new build steel frame pavilion to provide both changing room facility and an open plan social/teaching area, with stadium and bleachers seating overlooking the new 4G all weather hockey/lacrosse floodlit pitch.

Sustainable design: The school was keen to promote sustainability and therefore it was agreed that a ground source heat pump would be included to provide heating and hot water. Ventilation was provided by a mixture of high efficiency heat recovery and natural ventilation and lighting was all efficient LED lighting. The concept design separated the green roof from the building with a strip of glazing to give the effect of a floating roof, this caused problems for the ventilation which had very little space for units and no obvious locations for air inlets and exhaust. Working closely with the design team, it was proposed to the client that we use multiple smaller ventilation units which could be mounted in the ceiling voids available. Our architect would then design a built hidden riser into the internal walls to allow ductwork to vent through the roof.
