Mote Park Cafe, Visitor Centre and Estate Services Building

Chartway Construction was appointed main contractor for this prestigious D&B project within Mote Park in the heart of Maidstone town centre, on behalf of Maidstone Borough Council.

As main contractor, Chartway Construction worked tirelessly with the design team and our client from the offset, to ensure that best value was sought for our client as well as a successful outcome with the local planning authority.

The project included demolishing the existing dated Mote Park cafe building, out-grown estates service building and deteriorating public toilet block and comprised of the construction of a new cafe, bin storage, additional car parking facilities, new toilet block, including flexible function and learning space, in addition to the construction of a new storage facility, mess and welfare building for the park maintenance team.

The new cafe and visitor centre buildings are of steel frame construction, zinc cladding and roof covering approximately 450 square meters. The buildings have been thoughtfully designed to house a new changing places facility, a flexi-space with office for different activities, new toilet facilities for visitors to Mote Park, and a new café and dining space.

Located in the heart of Mote Park, adjacent to the former cafe offering views across both the lake and children’s play area, skate park and newly installed climbing and mini golf areas, careful consideration had to be given with regards to the construction process, health, safety and safeguarding of the general public. Access and egress of site vehicles had to be carefully planned and managed, as did contractor movements to ensure minimal disruption within the immediate area.

The new estates buildings are of steel frame construction, steel cladding and roof covering 140 square meters. The building has been thoughtfully designed to house tree cutters, rotavators, mowers, tractors and other machinery, along with providing the estates team a suitable base with the required welfare facilities and office accommodation.

Located in the heart of Mote Park, at the rear of the public leisure centre, careful consideration had to be given with regards to the construction process, health, safety and safeguarding of the general public. Access and egress of site vehicles had to be carefully planned and managed, as did contractor movements to ensure minimal disruption within the immediate area.

Key Project Details

Client - Maidstone Borough Council
Value - Circa £2.4m
Location - Maidstone
Duration - 40 weeks

Mote Park is in the heart of Maidstone and offers leisure facilities for thousands of visitors each day. The scheme is deemed to be a flagship project for both the Park and MBC and forms part of the larger regeneration works within Maidstone town centre. From the offset, we worked with both our client MBC and the local community to design and build a multi-use facility that would not only provide a functional purpose, but encourage both new and returning visitors to the park. It was important to both us and our client, that the local community and businesses got involved in the project. Where possible, with the exception of a couple of specialist packages, local labour and materials were been sourced, including Kentish Ragstone from a local quarry just 2 miles away.
